Salted Herring with Onions and Sunflower Oil
Classic Salted Herring with Onions
This traditional dish is simple, delicious, and perfect as an appetizer or side. Fresh salted herring dressed with fragrant sunflower oil and onions - a timeless combination!
Ingredients:
- 2-3 salted herring fillets
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced into rings
- 4-9 tablespoons CRAFT OIL Fragrant Sunflower Oil
- Black pepper to taste (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vinegar (optional, for onions)
- Fresh lemon wedges for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- If using whole salted herring, clean and fillet them. Remove all bones carefully.
- Cut the herring fillets into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm wide).
- Arrange the herring pieces in two rows on an elongated serving platter.
- Slice the onion into thin rings and layer them generously over the herring.
- Drizzle generously with fragrant sunflower oil.
- Add a pinch of black pepper if desired.
- Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve with fresh bread or boiled potatoes.
Tips:
The quality of sunflower oil is key to this dish! Our fragrant sunflower oil adds a rich, nutty flavor that perfectly complements the salty herring. To reduce the onion's sharpness, you can either soak the sliced onions in cold water for 10 minutes or sprinkle them with a little vinegar - both methods work great!
Serving suggestions: Perfect with boiled potatoes, rye bread, or as part of a traditional appetizer spread. Serve with a shot of cold vodka for an authentic experience!
Storage tip: This dish tastes even better after a few hours in the refrigerator as the flavors develop.
